Common Air Conditioning Questions
Coolcair have gathered a few common air conditioning questions that seem to repeat themselves. We will expand on this as we think of things or when new questions arise that haven’t yet covered.
Glossary of Air Conditioning terms/phrases:
Reverse Cycle describes how some air conditioning systems provide both cooling and heating using the same equipment. The heating process is literally the reverse of the cooling process.
Split System strictly speaking, describes any air conditioning system where the compressor unit and the fan coil unit are separated. It is mostly used to describe a highwall, room air conditioner, where the fancoil unit is mounted on the internal wall of the room and the compressor unit is mounted outside.
Star Rating is a simple method for identifying the energy efficiency of a given air conditioning unit. The more stars the more efficient the unit.
Heating Capacity is the heating rating (power) of an air conditioning system expressed in kilowatts. The higher the number the bigger the area the system will heat.
Cooling Capacity is the cooling rating (power) of an air conditioning system expressed in kilowatts. The higher the number the bigger the area the system will cool.
Common questions:
How often do I clean my filter? Depending on the environment or the air purity, in a normal domestic situation once every season is adequate. In a commercial situation, once every month.
Can I turn the air-con off at the powerpoint or at the fuse? It is OK to turn the power off, especially if you are away for long periods. Most units have a low wattage crankcase heater that keeps the compressor warm. If the compressor is cold, damage will occur at startup. If you turn off your air conditioner it must be turned on at least 12 hrs before use.
Air only coming out of some of the ducts. Ducted systems can be designed so that only parts of the house (zones) can be air conditioned at a time. Check that the zone switch is turned on.
During heating cycle, a white mist is expelled from the outdoor unit. During winter, most air conditioners defrost when the outdoor temperature is below 6 deg C. This mist is normal, it is only warm water vapour being expelled.
